Being a part of the online plus size community it is easy for me to forget that the fat positivity that I witness on the daily is still sadly something few get to experience. I can't lie, my life as a fat woman isn't all chocolates and roses (well there is a good amount of chocolate) but you know what makes you feel better after a negative doctor appointment or some jerk insulting you in the street? Reading intelligent, articulate, inspiring words from wonderful men and women that remind you that you deserve nothing less than a joy and respect filled life. With that in mind, here are some of my favourite resources of fat positivity on the net right now :
- I'm pretty obsessed with beautiful Amanda Apparell's blog right now. We all know I hold honesty very highly and Amanda is this in spades. Her writing is intelligent and thought provoking and I also love how she gives proper references for her quotes, facts and figures. She's also a really lovely lady and gorgeous to boot - what's not to love?
- The fact that I hold Bethany Rutter in very high regard is no secret and one reason why is her great knack for extremely eloquently putting across her opinions on fatness and society. We seem to be on the same wave length about a lot of things and what she says is often what is also going through my head, but she articulates it so much better than I ever could, especially on her excellent Twitter account.
- Speaking of Twitter, my absolute favourite account when it comes to talking fatness is Your Fat Friend. I have learnt so much from her and it has provided me with a much clearer way to explain the issues myself and fellow fat people deal with on a day to day basis. This is an excellent place to point someone who wants to learn about the complexities of being a fat person in today's society.
- Another woman who I openly sing the praises of on the regular is Marie Southard Ospina. I first met Marie the first year I started blogging at an Anna Scholz event and after reading her blog I fell head over heels for her writing style and her kind heart. She now writes mainly for Bustle and has produced more amazing articles than I can list, so please do click here and have a read for yourself. She even asked me to take part in her wonderful A Body Project series and you can read my article here.
- Last up is a podcast which brings me much joy - Bad Fat Broads. It's only fairly recently I've gotten into podcasts and BFB was one of the game changers not just for me but for many people lucky enough to discover it. BFB is produced by two fabulous people Ariel and KC and in their words gives "the bad fat bitch perspective on everything important". I have learned a lot from these ladies and about way more than just fat activism - this really is an essential listen for pretty much everyone who wishes to become a better person through broadened knowledge.
- Jes Baker is a phenomenal woman and her blog is a must read covering far more than fat acceptance. She is not only a blogger but also a speaker, an author and a mental health professional and in her own words is "...on a mission to turn our society's concept of beauty on its oppressive head as I
genuinely believeknow for a fact that every person in this world is worthy of respect and feeling valued regardless of their size, shape, shade, sex, ability, gender or age." She also wrote a book! - Finally the magnificent Virgie Tovar - a brilliant author, fearless activist and creator of #LoseHateNotWeight. Virgie also created 'Babecamp' a 4 week online course designed to help women who are ready to break up with diet culture and start living a full life. It's a mission of mine to one day attend one of her talks.
I'll hopefully be adding to this list so do pop back every now and again to find some new and amazing people/podcasts/social media accounts/web mags.
